  • Notes
    • The parentage of William Leeming c. 1803 to 1869 & Thomas Leeming c. 1808 to 1891.

No birth/baptism details have been found to date for these two people despite extensive searches of parish registers and associated documents for either of these two Leemings, although they do appear in the censuses.

William states in the census of 1851 and 1861that he was born in Eavestone after which he died. Thomas likewise appears in the censuses of 1851, 1861, 1871 & 1881 after which he died. Every time they give their birth place as Eavestone. This is solid for both of them – never a variation, so this can be taken as fact.

All the Leemings that say they were born in Eavestone in the 1851 census have been examined and can be put them into families almost without exception. It is therefore concluded from the parish register and census entries that there were just two Leeming families producing children in Eavestone in the relevant period. The two families are those of Roger Leeming & Margaret Brooks and John Leeming & Catherine Bousfield.

William cannot be the son of John & Catherine as they had a William (1810 to 1862) and would not have called him that with a previous William still living. Thomas could fit in between their John & Elizabeth. Roger & Margaret Brooks could be the parents of both William and Thomas as there is otherwise a gap in their issue.

On balance it is felt that it is more likely that both William & Thomas are issue of Roger & Margaret Brooks. If this is not the case, Thomas could be a son of John & Catherine Bousfield. However, as Roger and John were brothers, this would not affect the male line other than the generation in question.
