Joseph Leeming (Joe) was born in Horsforth, near Leeds, Yorkshire, England on 7th May 1893 at the family residence - 16 Golden Bank which was a small terraced house. He is interesting because he emigrated to Canada where he joined the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force towards the end of the first world war. His Attestation Paper shows that he joined on 25th May 1917 despite a problem with his eyes. His address at the time was 457 Nicolet St. Montreal, Quebec, Canada and at that time his occupation was "Core Maker" and he was single.
After his initial military training, he served in France until the end of the war. He then returned to Canada for demobilisation. He then married Evelyn Sutcliffe in Leeds registration district in the last quarter of 1918 and then took her back to Canada, but soon returned as Evelyn could not tolerate the cold winters. They returned to Horsforth where some time later they opened a "Fruiterer's Shop" in Town Street which he ran until near his death in 1868.
Various records show that during his life time his occupation varied from Boot Maker (1911 census) to Core Maker (Attestation Paper), Plasterer, Soldier and Fruiterer. It is however, their fruiterer's shop for which they are remembered.
